The Department of Agriculture and Cooperation of the Indian Ministry of Agriculture, under the National Project on Organic Farming (NPOF) has approved the launching of a national organic participatory guarantee system (PGS) programme. The programme would be under a Government patronage. The National Centre of Organic Farming (NCOF)  is now broadly consulting on the draft operational manual.

The manual includes a step-by-step description of the certification process. In addition a four-page national PGS organic production standard is proposed.

The existing NGO-led Indian PGS system could easily be integrated into this new government-supported programme.
